Artistic background

Having worked on various mediums for several years, Raj now considers himself as a watercolor artist since 2018. Due to travelling nature of his work, Raj finds watercolor materials easy to carry and it always finds space in his backpack. The very unpredictable nature of watercolor is so mysterious that the end result is always unpredictable to certain extent and that mystery drives him all the time. Most of his artworks are done plein air or a combination of imagination and subjects from photographs or sometimes paintings of other artists who have inspired him. His method of painting is a simple 4 step process - drawing, first wash, second wash and detailing. Drawing is necessary to place objects at the right place keeping focal point and perspective in mind although his drawings are very loose and he tends to change or move subjects while coloring. When it comes to coloring, he prefers a very limited palate which basically included primary colors and greys from brands like Sennelier, Winsor & Newton etc. He prefers using tubes as they are fresh out of the tubes. The first wash involves filling in the white paper (I prefer 300 gsm artists paper from Saunders waterford, Winsor & Newton, Arches and Hahnemuhle) with colors and only leaving the whites as deemed required. Once dried, the second layer ensured enhancing the subjects specially around the focal point followed by the last and the final detailing. He prefers to give sometime between washes to revisit how the painting evolves over time and takes necessary corrective actions.
