Artistic background

BA Hons Degree, Art & Design, Jewellery & Silversmithing, Glasgow School of Art.
PGCE Education: Art & Design Teacher , 1993 to 2024.
Owner: 'AJW' Jewellery, 1983 to 1996.

I taught for many years in Secondary Education. Throughout this time I continued to follow my passion for Art. In my early years it was mainly smaller pieces I created, such as jewellery, small boxes etc. At that time I worked with anodised titanium.

In 2007 I found fused glass. Fusing glass immediately appealed to me as I have a passion for colour. It opened up a whole new world of creativity. Once again, I started off small but soon realised the potential of making fused glass pictures. I made my first large fused glass picture in 2010. Since then I have not looked back.

Interests

My biggest interest is my Art. It is my time alone in my own wee world of colour. The majority of my free time is spent in my studio.

I am a paddleboarder, so frequently find myself on the water. A lot of my inspiration comes from paddling around the Scottish Islands. I am fortunate to have easy access to the Isle of Arran and the beaches around the West Coast of Scotland. Tayvallich and Carsaig Bay are just so calming and beautiful. Lying back on my paddleboard, looking at the sky and surrounding landscape is my idea of Heaven.
