Artistic background

I specialise in biomorphic abstracts that are completed using a combination of the transparent watercolour technique and klecksography. I am inspired by medieval art, cave art and Victorian illustrators as well as modern cartoonists and Rorschach. Klecksographical illustrations are created by flooding the paper with watercolour and then as images appear to the mind (as they might appear in clouds) they are drawn often using ink and the painting is built up this way. The paintings are like fairytale illustrations in that they are colourful and full of characters and stories; however like fairytales the stories are often very dark. The themes that come out these paintings often reference myths and literature, natural history, science, trade, and psychoanalysis. These biomorphic abstracts are in private collections all over the world

Although most people think of klecksography as the symmetrical shapes of the Rorschach test, it’s originally a Victorian parlour game of turning blobs and sad splatters of paint into drawings by finding images hidden in the paint, it was only later as Rorschach developed his psychological test that paper was folded in two as he hoped it would help people see the images easier.
