Artistic background

My love affair with art started a long time ago, way before I first picked up a brush in 1997. Visiting art galleries has always been one of my favourite pastimes and recently I find a lot of new art via Instagram.

My influences are eclectic, from Turner through Impressionism and Post-impressionism, to modern abstract painting. I’m a big fan of early 20th Century British painting, and it’s always a thrill to find an example in a provincial municipal art gallery (there’s a lovely Wilson-Steer in York), but I also love a big abstract-expressionist. The Rothko room in Tate Modern feels almost sacred to me. Recently I was lucky enough to catch a John Hoyland exhibition in Sheffield and that has really influenced my most recent work.

Most of my work is landscape or abstract with the two forms getting closer together the more I paint.
