Bold, Dramatic and Colourful Abstract & Semi-Abstract Landscapes.
Acrylic & Mixed Media on Canvas.

Artistic background

Originally from South Yorkshire, I have now been lucky enough to call Saddleworth my home for the past 15 years.
It is this stunning landscape that continues to inspire me to create abstract and semi-abstract paintings and photographs. I not only aim to capture the rugged beauty of this land but more importantly, to convey the emotion it evokes in me. From wild moorland to big skies, rolling hills and rocky peaks. I find the northern vistas both exciting and calming in equal measure.
I actually studied Photography up in Newcastle back in 1998/99 but feel painting gives me that added freedom of creativity to display much more than just a ‘real’ image. Prior to my photography study, I took a foundation course in Art & Design, trying a ‘bit of everything’ before choosing a specialism. I honestly LOVED all of it. I could easily have chosen fine art, ceramics or textiles. I believe, if you’re a creative person, that’s it, you just love creating.
My paintings are bold and dramatic abstract landscapes based on the awe-inspiring views I see around me every day. The release of breath when the sleeping giants, Alderman and Alphin (two of the great Saddleworth hills) come into view is a feeling I will never take for granted.
I have layered up mixed acrylics and using a variety of brushes, palette knifes, rollers and my fingers to add texture and movement to my artwork, try my best to re-create the emotions I feel when engulfed in my local, natural surroundings.
Art is just something within me, something I just need to do, like breathing. I will continue to express my creativity while I have life in me to do it.
While I do enjoy visiting galleries and exhibitions, and loved the art history side of my studies, nature and in particular, northern landscapes will continue to be my muse and the place where I am most at peace and happy.

A few quotes from visitors to my recent home exhibition:

'Love the clouds. Ethereal and angelic!'
'Beautiful colour ways, building up texture'

Interests

Husband to Gemma (hardest working midwife in Manchester) Father to Seth (13) and Edith (10) and human 'Dad' to Ralph (a crazy 2 year old border terrier.)
We love exploring the great outdoors, be it hiking in the hills, paddle boarding over lakes, cycling disused railway lines.. nature really is the best medicine for good mental health and always an inspiration for my art work.
Some of our favourite places to visit include Northumberland, the Yorkshire Dales, the Lake District, North Wales & Anglesey, the Derbyshire Peak District and stunning Saddleworth of course. I love to travel but there is something about the North of England and surrounding areas that I feel most 'at home.'
I am a big Music fan and have a wide range of taste. From Rock & Metal to Soul & Blues, Country & Americana and lots in-between. My 10 minutes of calm in a day consists of me putting on a record, sitting down and just listening. My current favourite is the best of 'Richard Hawley' Sheffield's finest... something about his dulcet tones that takes me away to 'somewhere else.'
I play a little guitar (self taught) and try to get to as many gigs as I can. There's nothing quite like live music. I much prefer the smaller, more intimate venues these days, the Holmfirth Picturedrome is one of my favourites, an absolute gem of a place.
Photography continues to be a great passion of mine. Capturing that moment in time will always be a magical thing to me. Also, noticing how the light changes throughout a day and the subtle differences over the seasons; changes how you see the world and makes you notice the 'details' all around us. I always encourage people to not just look ahead... look up and down, to the horizon and up close to things, you might just see something you haven't seen before.
