I live and work in Hampshire from a small studio in the garden. Following my long career as a successful ceramic restorer I made a welcome return to full time painting, completing a period of extensive study with The Open College of the Arts to refresh my techniques.My contemporary landscape paintings are reflective, impressions of places I know well or have visited, they are an expressive response to an observed situation, or to a fleeting moment. Working in oils, acrylic, or mixed media my paintings are visual echoes of my reactions to contact with the environment. I aspire to capture an essence of a place, how it seemed at a particular moment, and recreate that atmosphere in paint on canvas. I use a spontaneous impasto technique that builds colour and textured marks into contrasting quiet and vigorous passages, creating visual and tactile interest.
Much thought, study, sketching, and note taking on site, to enable me to create a spontaneous free flowing landscape painting. I relish the seasonal moods and changes of the landscape, painting in tune with the seasons.
