Sailing off Ness Cove Beach looking north is inspired The Ness beach at Shaldon, South Devon. It is accessed via an original Smugglers tunnel, that comprises both a sloping path down, and some steps. Ness Cove is one our most secluded and picturesque beaches, completely enclosed by the shelter of the cliffs above.

Mainly shingle, the beach graduates gently towards the sea, and provides a great swimming area. Fishing for shrimps in the rock pools, or try fishing from the beach.

The Ness beach is known to have been used by smugglers in the past. Some think that the tunnel used to access the beach today was built by them, hence it’s name Smugglers Tunnel, however another rumour is that it was actually created by the owners of nearby Ness House in the 1800’s so that they could access the beach. Whatever it’s original purpose it’s a wonderful way to get to the beach, with it’s dark entrance and windy path through the heart of the cliff ending with a wonderful view down onto the beach as you exit at the other end.

There are yellow marker buoys out to sea, and boats are not permitted to enter the area between them and the shoreline, to enable swimming safely, apart from access to the beach via a marked access lane as marked on the beach maps.

Inspiration
I am an oil painter inspired by the energy of the seas. Studying film and art at the University of Plymouth has influenced the way I paint. It is important to me to include a sense of movement in my work. Having moved permanently to Devon 18 years ago, it is Devon and Cornwall’s coastline that still inspires me.

My seascape series of paintings have evolved over the years. I am keen to explore the force of the ocean, the light coming through the waves and the ever changing colour of the sea

For my work I like to use oil paint. This medium is very versatile allowing you to add thick impasto layers or more fluid translucent ones. As a result this medium is very useful when you want to capture ocean waves in all their forms and variety of colours. Also it is such robust a medium I can scrape the paint back or scratch into it too for added texture.

I graduated with a BA (Hons) in Fine Art in 2008 at the University of Plymouth. I have exhibited my paintings throughout Devon and gained an award at the Exeter Short Film festival. My films and photographs have been exhibited on the South Bank, London and in Italy. I am a Geopark Ambassador Artist for the English Riviera UNESCO Global Geopark.
