Description
Thank you for your interest. This image of a Bluetit is painted on a real turkey tail feather. I love doing these portraits. The art of painting directly on to a feather (also called Plumeria) started around pre-Hispanic times in what is now called Mexico but at the beginning of the 17th century it began to die out and by the 20th century very little remained of the art.
The feathers I use are thoroughly cleaned and treated, some times they need to be straightened out and the barbs coaxed into place. I then give it a clear coat a gesso, a ground layer to give a smooth surface to paint on. The feather painting comes to you fixed on a supporting backing board, This will give you the option of choosing a frame to your liking, ie. maybe to suit your home decor if needed.
