Description
Situated some 362 nautical miles west of Chile in the South Pacific are the Juan Fernandez islands of which the largest is the island now named Robinson Crusoe Island .
From 1704 to 1709 , Alexander Selkirk was marooned there and became the partial inspiration for Daniel Defoe’s fictional novel Robinson Crusoe although the novel is set in the Caribbean .
On visiting the island I was taken by the volcanic geology . This painting was sourced from a couple of photos ( and acknowledgement to Nicki Heenan) of a bay surrounded by cliffs where several seals were resident . In an attempt to capture the rock texture and colour I have adopted an abstract approach . The painting is in watercolour on Bockingford 140lb paper . It is unframed .
