David Woodhall

David Woodhall

In conversation with Humph Hack - Curator

I asked David when he began to paint.

He told me, “I started to paint as soon as lockdown started.” He was keen to use the time fruitfully by developing a new skill.

He spent time improving his bonsai garden, which involved making Japanese signs.

"Since then I have primarily focussed on beach scenes and Landscapes inspired by places I have visited in the UK and The Cayman Islands where my son now lives. I love to capture the pure beauty of the spectacular drift wood and backdrop of Turquoise seas, white beaches and exotic foliage."

When I asked about favourite artists, David said, “Initially I collected the simplistic works of John Miller, who spent his entire life in Cornwall, painting the Cornish coasts often using only 3 colours.”

However when he visited the Cayman Islands, he discovered an artist called John Clark who captures all the vibrant colours of the foliage and paints them in almost a cartoon style.

“I followed this method while I developed my own style”.

As regards, his choice of medium – “I paint in acrylic, as I love the way it blends on canvas when doing skies and the various colours that make up the ocean.”

He generally uses two or three photos of a scene he intends to paint as a rough guide. "Artistic licence allows me to change them to make my paintings unique“.

Like many of the artists on artgallery.co.uk, David has a full-time job and also runs a football coaching company.

“My studio has become a special place for me to switch off from the stresses of life”

His work has been shown in galleries in Cornwall, Greece, Malvern, the Cotswolds and the West Midlands.

When he retires, he wants to be able to spend more creative time - sharing his work with even more people.
David is happy to undertake commissions of paintings of landscapes which are personal to you. For more information email help@artgallery.co.uk
