Artistic background

I have been drawing and painting for many years. I used to work in pastel but now, almost exclusively, work in oils.

Having gained a Certificate in Education with Art as a main subject at The Froebel Institute College of Education in England, and a Bachelor of Education Honours Degree, I went on to teach Art and general subjects in primary and middle schools in England and overseas.

I have travelled widely and lived in different countries around the world; I studied Chinese painting when living in China and Singapore.

Whilst living in the US from 2002 to 2013, I studied pastel painting, particularly portraiture, with Jeanne Smith, and figure painting with Rhoda Yanow at the duCret School of Art. I also studied portraiture with Enrique Flores-Galbis at The Visual Arts Center of New Jersey and took a portrait workshop with Alain Picard in Connecticut. I studied landscape painting with Julie Friedman in her studio in Morristown, New Jersey, as well as taking workshops on “Abstracting the Landscape”, “Home-made Surfaces”, “Infusing Color and Emotion into a Painting”, “En Plein Air Painting”, and “Landscape Rhythm and Harmony” with Julie Friedman. I also took a workshop on “Painting Skies and Clouds” with Will Klemm, and have studied pastel figure and portraiture at The Art Students League, New York City, with Jerry Weiss and Ellen Eagle.

It was in America that I became juried into membership of some of the most prestigious art clubs in New York City – The Pastel Society of America, The American Artists Professional League and The Catharine Lorillard Wolfe Art Club. I also passed juried entry into many art exhibitions, and won awards.

I am now lucky enough to live in the “Designated Area of Natural Beauty” of the lower Wye Valley in Wales. Since living here I have taken online courses with Nancy Medina and Bill Inman, and I am presently studying with Julie Friedman.

Interests

I am a very keen gardener: I love flowers and take great pride in filling my garden with many beautiful colours, as well as displaying flowers and plants in the house.

I enjoy line dancing, pilates and walking in the beautiful Welsh countryside where I live, and like to watch the birds and other wildlife that frequents our rural area.
