Artistic background

About the artist: Olivia is New Zealand born, and grew up spending a lot of time outdoors enjoying New Zealand’s stunning beaches and bush. She has Scottish heritage though, and has called Scotland home for 17 years. The beautiful countries where she has lived on both sides of the world have provided inspiration for her art, as have travels throughout Southeast Asia and Europe over the years.

Olivia’s curious mind means her love of colour, metallics and texture is often combined with a desire to experiment with different styles, techniques and sizes. This keeps the creative process exciting, and results in series of paintings that each have a distinct identity. She says she finds inspiration everywhere – from a piece of prose to an interesting shape in a building, and is someone who has a camera roll full of forgotten things she has snapped to come back to later. Flowers and gardens are always a favourite subject though, whether they be in an abstract / stylised form or something more literal.

Olivia has always enjoyed creating, and has loved painting with acrylics from a very young age. She has a much loved, and very chatty chocolate Burmese cat called Oscar who she says is all too willing to ‘contribute’ to her creative process should he get the chance – a wet palette or moving brush is sometimes just too much temptation!

Quote

“A piece of art is often created over many days or weeks. During that time a thousand thoughts are thought, a thousand feelings felt, and a thousand tiny decisions made. So even a seemingly simple piece can have a rich and complex backstory” – quote from the artist, Olivia Rodger
