Luana Stebule
In conversation with Humph Hack - Curator
I knew Luana was born and studied art in Lithuania – exhibiting and selling across Europe and further afield.
I asked her if the UK is a good place to try to sell?
She told me, “I have been living here since 2013. Many of the paintings I sold in Europe, were from physical exhibitions. And, in Lithuania I had many collectors who bought my artworks.”
In England, where initially she was unknown, she found physical galleries full of empty promises and some expecting big up-front payments.
“My research has been into online galleries, where I am now selling my paintings.”
She is also able to sell to her old collectors from Europe.
When we discussed what paint she chooses, she told me, “The majority of current paintings are oil on canvas, I don’t particular like acrylic”
In winter, she uses watercolours and oil pastels.
“For many years my favourite technique was collage. I used wood, mirrors, textile, leather, sawdust and painted the surface with oil colours”. The resulting artworks are richly textured.
Although Luana’s work is always decorative, some have deeper meanings.
“The decorative comes from my personality. As regards subject matter, it will be travel, music and nature. Some will be inspired by the inner world of meditation and dreams.”
When making art she follows her intuition.
“Since 2020 I discovered a new way to express myself - how to draw human figures, faces and other objects in a different way. I never stick with one style, or technique, it is boring. The majority of artists who sell well, use only one style. I have a different attitude”.
Luana’s art makes me smile.
“I like humour. But it comes naturally. Like in my recent artwork “PrimaDonna”, I had a ballet dancer friend, thoughts about her inspired me to create this artwork.
When asked about artists who inspired her – “I admire Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, Claude Monet, Pierre Bonnard paintings”. She likes Hockney and Turner, but also likes old masters Diego Velasquez, Sandro Botticelli, and Leonardo da Vinci.
Her love of opera, ballet, classical music, books, travels and architecture all influence her philosophy and artwork.
When asked about hopes for the future? Luana wishes to stay healthy and creative.
“I would like a solo exhibition in London - to travel around the world and participate in the international exhibitions”.
Her most recent and memorable exhibitions were the FIABCN Art Fair in Barcelona, and the Other Art Fair, curated by Saatchi Art in Dallas, USA.
She hopes that selling on artgallery.co.uk will help raise her profile This is despite her artworks being included in more than 20 art books and anthologies.
