Description
Abinger Hammer is a delightful Surrey village on the River Tillingbourne. Now idyllic this river was once industrial, with more mills than you could imagine, covering production of gunpowder, grain, paper as well as driving hammers used in forging iron
Abinger as the name suggests was one such village. Fired by charcoal, the forests were exhausted and after Abraham Darby discovered how to smelt iron with coke, the industry moved north to Coalbrookdale
Today the old mill ponds are used for growing watercress or breeding fish
