Description
The canal runs through my home village of St Johns. It was cut in the late c18 and was intended to run down to Southampton and linking with London. The canal reached Basingstoke before being superseded by railways, and construction stopped, and the existing canal abandoned. After years of neglect and dilapidation the existing canal was restored by enthusiasts, and today caters for leisure barges and as a haven for wildlife
