Description
A carefully researched painting depicting the launching of the lifeboat ´Rimmington´ at Sidmouth, Devon on New Year´s Eve 1872. The rescue of the crew of the French brigantine Emmeline was successful, although they were landed at nearby Beer because of the worsening weather conditions. The lifeboat returned to Sidmouth when the storm had passed.
I know this stretch of coastline very well and my previous studio was on the cliff top near the centre of the line of cliffs in the painting. The studio roof is just about visible and the building had originally been built as a lookout during the Napoleonic Wars.
