Description

The canvas is unframed although it can be hung without a frame. A string is already attached. Alternatively it can be framed (and I would suggest a very simple, wooden frame, painted white would be very good.)

The idea that emerged (I must say towards the end of the process) during the creation of this acrylic abstract on canvas is that our ability to use our brains, to question, to think hard about things can enable us to see the underlying direction of processes in our experience that, on the surface, might appear as a world of chance, of accidents of fate, of clutter, of complexity and perhaps also of confusion. So, and in short, this painting symbolises the replacement of ignorance with science. It’s focal point is a head with an eye. The eye looks towards a yellow disc (symbolic of the sun) which, by means of curved lines passing through it reveals a trajectory. The rising of the sun, a bringer of light (and enlightenment) through that aforementioned ocean of complexity and confusion is, in fact, ‘4seeable’ by the enlightened, active, questioning human brain. A message of hope and confidence that there is a better tomorrow for humankind and, by implication, that the horrors of war and the absurd, stupid and disdainful co-existence on our planet of ridiculous opulence on the one hand and unnecessary poverty on the other will, in the end, be overcome and replaced by something better. That is the meaning of this painting and therefore I present it as a picture that is not simply an object of decoration (although it is that for sure) but is a painting in the tradition of art with a message.

In terms of the picture itself and in view of the composition of lines, squares, oblongs and strong colours there are stylistic echos (I put it no more strongly than that) of De Stijl and perhaps also of Constructivism and there is an obvious nod to Symbolism. These 19th and 20th century art movements have perhaps had some influence in this painting. I think it is an exciting and vibrant work but it's also balanced, I feel. In fact, balance was something I was particularly concerned about as I composed this. But it also has meaning and it has obvious connected focal points. That’s what I have to say about it. Its an honest, meaningful and visually stimulating piece of modern, abstract art and I hope you like it!
