In the 1930s, the fascist uprising in Spain became a focus for resistance against the growing fascist threat throughout Europe. Artists’ communities in various parts of Europe, eg the union Col•legi Professional de Disseny Gràfic in Barcelona created powerful propaganda art to help this resistance. Posters persuaded all ages to do what they could – collect donations, clothes, food & medical supplies. Others gave talks, distributed leaflets, organised demonstrations and yet more volunteered to drive supplies, ambulances and staff destined for the field hospitals. Volunteer fighters joined the International Brigades and other militias. Approx. 2-4,000 are thought (to date) to have gone from Britain. Artists had uncompromising and life-saving messages to send out and many feared for their own lives. One of a series of works depicting the part played by Britain in the Spanish Civil War. This is a limited edition linocut print one of only 4 produced. The print image itself measures W11" x H8".
