For this series of work - The Butterfly Collection - wanted each image to work not only on individual merit but also harmonising when placed with others to create a visually stimulating and eye catching collection. This piece is made form a vintage 1930s map, the charm of this are the old names are visible - Ceylon, Rhodesia, Siam etc. All maps are visually correct, their positions on the map from left to right and from top to bottom are geographically accurate. The illusion of flight was achieved by mounting each individual piece by hand and bending the wings accordingly to give a 3D effect. Finally the recycling of the materials used is an obvious analogy of the life cycle and transformation of the butterfly. Framed and ready to hang.
