I never tire of painting dancers and cats as they are close to my heart. This painting is inspired by the Indian actress, the beautiful Rekha who played "Umrao Jaan" a courtesan of Lucknow in the movie of the same name. Umrao Jaan is a 1981 Bollywood film directed by Muzaffar Ali. Based on the 1905 Urdu novel Umrao Jaan Ada, the film tells the story of a Lucknow courtesan and her rise to fame and fall. As a child who is kidnapped in the year 1840 and sold to a lady running a brothel, the little girl is trained to be a singer-dancer and she grows up to be an accomplished poetess and a renowned courtesan, Umrao Jaan. The dancing courtesan would woe the well to do in the city. And the story continues. It is a very touching story, of a woman who pines to lead a normal life. A movie to be watched. For the story and the portrayal of Umrao Jaan by actress RekhaI always wonder why the Governments of the countries in the world do nothing to save the lives of the women who have been forced into the flesh trade, even though they know very well where these brothels are run etc. The story is the same everywhere, children kidnapped and sold to brothels. A life never their own. A life they never dreamt of, a million dreams of a normal life crushed for money hungry men and women.I dedicate this painting to Umrao Jaan and the score of women like her, lives wasted to work against their will.Size: 8.25"x 11.25" approximately. About the Artist

A self taught artist residing in India, art is a passion for me. Watching my father make small pen sketches on the Newspaper margins I too developed interest in art, and like any other child, started drawing. This continued as a leisure activity. I started taking my art seriously since the last...
