To Be Sociable - Original Artwork
"To Be Sociable" is a colourful, original piece of mixed media artwork. Inspired by my own mental health experiences it is an expressive piece related to anxiety, depression and PTSD.
It is sold framed within a black aluminium 50x40cm frame and the artwork itself is A3 sized. In line with my environmental beliefs, large parts of this piece are upcycled from packaging and magazines etc thus having minimal impact upon the environment.
For some, socialising comes easily. Why wouldn’t you chat with everybody you meet, drink so much you recall nothing of the night before and hug every other person you meet.
For others, the social scene can seem like being dropped, blindfolded and naked, into a rainforest.
Transitioning between medications for anxiety and depression as part of my treatment for PTSD, I find myself experiencing both social scenarios as if being torn in half. A rollercoaster of emotions creates a vibrant and colourful split in personality and engagement with the world around me to the point of being unclear who I am, where I want to be, and what I want to do.
“To Be Sociable” was an expression of my mental state during this transition process.
Art, whether photography or mixed media collage, allows me to process emotions and experiences in a less volatile and destructive manner. It is also perhaps an answer to the age old “How are out?” without the automatic, almost obligatory, “Good thanks, you?”
