The Causeway

This is my image of the Giant's Causeway in the north of County Antrim in Northern Ireland. The causeway is made up of 40 000 interlocking basalt columns. These hexagonal rocks were formed fifty to sixty million years ago by the cooling of molten rock. It is a World Heritage Site and a chief tourist attraction of Northern Ireland. I have painted the image in an impressionistic style using a limited palette with free-flowing dry brushwork. I painted in this manner to capture the essence of the scene in which The Causeway is filled with life and light exposed as it is to the northerly winds.
