This is the Porters Lodge of Lews Castle. It dates back to the mid eighteen hundreds when Sir Mattheson built the castle with his fortune made from trading goods from Hong Kong. (Often opium) The weather in the Outer Hebrides is wild and unpredictable so to paint my basic structure was dodgy to say the least! Fine days are few and far between and although the sun shone the wind blew the paint off my brushes! A quick retreat home with a photo to finish by was necessary. The lodge is a very popular wedding photo shoot. It is on the edge of the castle grounds and very picturesque. I enjoy working with acrylics and oils, layering paint and applying it thickly by palette knife. So this painting was a real pleasure to work on. The painting continues down the sides so framing is not necessary. A hanging wire is on the back to give a snug fit to the wall and I have coated the painting with a UV spray to prevent fading.

About the Artist

My love affair with art began many years ago when I was on top of Table Mountain, South Africa. I was so completely over-awed by the magnificent view of Cape Town and Lion Mountain that I started to sketch on a scrap of paper and never looked back. I spent three years working and studying with...
