Piece Work #002
A multi coloured grid of 4cm squares applied using palette knife. The matrix of coloured panels is centrally registered on the canvas. Inspired by colour matching charts used in the printing industry this process painting explores the idea of repetition and the alienation of creative control in art production. I wanted to put myself in the position of an artist required only to carry out the instructions of another. The specification for this painting is provided in the form of a blueprint certificate of authenticity which dictates the dimensions and composition. Colours are laid down entirely randomly with only the stipulation being that like colours cannot be applied adjacent to each other. Despite the random method of production the completed canvas encourages a state of pareidolia in the viewer and in differing lighting conditions new patterns emerge.
