Postage Stamp Collage A former President of South Africa, Nelson Mandela was the first to be elected in fully democratic elections. Before his presidency, Mandela was an anti- apartheid activist and spent 27 years in prison much of it on Robben Island, on convictions for crimes allegedly committed while he led the struggle against apartheid. This portrait, which is created from over 3000 used postage stamps, includes his prison number and year of his imprisonment 466-64, the number 64 representing the year 1964. The background colours are the main colours of the South African flag. The black vertical lines can also be seen to represent prison bars enclosing his shoulder on the left side. These bars on the right side appear to go behind the shoulder suggesting his future freedom. His shirt is built up using South African Stamps, the animals, fish and flowers having many symbolic features.
