In the past, this island was seen as a fortess as well as a place of religious pilgramage. It remained unconquered during the Hundred Years' War and a small garrison fended off a full attack by the English in 1433. Two hundred years ago almost 1,000 people lived on the island. Currently there are only 50; the lower buildings being shops, restaurants as well as a small number of homes.
Some mornings, the only section visible above the sea mist are the buildings associated with worship and defence.
