Legend of Spinsters Rock
Most people have heard of Stonehenge but there is another rock formation that can be found in the hills of Dartmoor National Park called Spinsters Rock, a Neolithic burial chamber erected around 3000 BC. There are many legends about this stone formation that adds to its mystery and intrigue.
The legend I like the most is the following: There were once three local spinsters living nearby. These were not spinsters in the sense of single ladies but ’spinsters’ in the woollen sense, i.e. wool spinners. One morning before breakfast the three ladies set out to take their spun wool to the local ‘jobber’ (wool trader). The stones had long since collapsed and when they passed the spot where the fallen monument stood, they decided to spend some time re-erecting three granite slabs which were like the walls of a house of cards. The Spinsters capped them with a huge granite slab stone leaving us with the ‘Spinster’s Rock’. How they managed to lift the huge capstone is open to speculation and a sense of magic and wonder.
