Inspired by a photograph by Edward Curtis circa 1900. The Navajo are a Native American people of the Southwestern United States primarily in the state of what is now Arizona. The history of the native North Americans after the influx of the Europeans, is a history steeped in mistreatment, broken treaties, broken promises and the systematic destruction of a beautiful way of life. This image of Hatali Nez touched me deeply. You can see in his face the profound sadness and sense of defeat reflected by a man who had forever lost...everything.
