I like seascapes. My father was a Chief Engineer in the Merchant Navy and I spent a couple of school holidays on his ship. In bad weather I realised what a lonely and dangerous place the sea is. I have always had an interest in aviation and wanting to paint a seascape I decided on recreating a scene that happened on many occasions. Returning from raids, badly damaged aircraft could not always make it home and their only hope was to attempt ditching in the North Sea. If they survived the perilous procedure they were then at the mercy of the sea, with only a small chance of being spotted and rescued. I wanted to paint a happy ending, deciding to include a Lowestoft Drift Trawler returning home with a full catch and happening on a dingy with the crew of a ditched Lancaster who having survived their ordeal would live to fight another day. Many were not so fortunate.
