One of a series of paintings depicting the part played by Britain in the Spanish Civil War, this linocut print is the partner of Dancing for our Dinner 1. It is a limited edition, one of only 6 produced. The print image itself measures W8" x H11". The picture tells the story of the Spanish child evacuees, 4000 of whom were being sheltered in Britain from 1937 after their homes in Northern Spain had been destroyed by Nazi and Nationalist forces. At first put into hundreds of white tepees in a camp outside Southampton, they were soon moved to homes, houses and colonies in many parts of the country, including The Grange, the Clarks’ house in Street, Somerset. The British government did not, however, support their upkeep financially as it was determined to be non-interventionist at this time. The children were therefore dependent on donations and funds they had to raise themselves from concerts of traditional Basque singing and dancing.
