This is a small watercolor and ink work that is part of a series of butterflies rare as well as commonplace, found in the British Isles. I have adored and been fascinated with these beautiful and ethereal insects as a child and their magic never fades.
This small, fast-flying butterfly is now restricted to damp grassy habitats in western Scotland
The Chequered Skipper died out from England in 1976 and re-establishment trials have taken place since 1990. In Scotland, there are thought to be about ten core areas and there have been no obvious recent changes in range. I painted these butterflies flitting amongst Purple Moor-grass and False Brome, both grasses vital as their food source.
