This groundbreaking painting is created using a unique technique invented by the artist. The final painting of a single daisy is delicate, ethereal and fragile and can only hint at the extreme process which created it. Various mixtures of beeswax, oils and resins are mixed with oil paint and applied warm to the canvas to create a fluid mixture. It is then ignited with a blowtorch. The paint can burn from within a few inches of flame to almost a metre in height. The artist then controls the extent of the fire, height and direction of the flame and smoke using a compressed air gun which finally extinguishes the flames. It is a very fluid process in which the artist constantly has to respond to the flames throughout the painting process. The final result is a complex mix of wax and oils similar to encaustic paintings. The movement of the hot molten paint mixture as well as the soot deposits on the wet areas of paint create a huge amount of movement and depth. Viewers are drawn to the Fire Daisy paintings because there is so much to look at. Each painting is by its very nature completely original.
