This wide format canvas perfectly suits this woodland scene. I hadn't appreciated, before this painting just how much deer antlers mimicked the growth of tree branches. One of the lovely things about watching animals in their setting is their fascinating camouflage. This was painted in late September and their coats in the sunshine blended into the soft oranges, pinks and greys of dulling grasses and foliage. Even the white flashes on tails were matched with drying twigs and broken twigs, hence the white hints of paint among the colourful foliage in the foreground. The painting has a very leafy and outdoor feel and the deer provide an equally interesting focal area, knowing that this is the calm before the rut which happens in October.
