My journey into art started relatively late in my life, in my 40s. But influences that shaped my vision and perceptions have appeared since my childhood in 1960s North Wales, big cities like Manchester, London, Lisbon & Prague and provincial towns in Portugal, Eastern Europe and the West Country where I have lived for over 30 years. I use a variety of media: watercolour, acrylics, pastels, charcoal, Conté, graphite and inks and have used methods such as collage, linocut and monotype. But even though I might push its boundaries, I return to charcoal as I return to my home. I’ve collected many rich visual memories and insights into other cultures throughout my career as a language teacher, living and travelling in other countries all my life. Being still as a traveller has its own benefits: you slow down and you watch, you absorb the surroundings, routines and daily life, the movements, the colours and the shapes that make up the constant scene around you. These elements may have re-emerged in my art in other guises, but even now, I can trace a love of colour & light in urban surroundings back to my life in Portugal, the visual attraction of the buzz and movement of Spain and the forms of its monumental constructions and Moorish architecture, the stark monochromes of the Czech Lands in winter or its soft ochres in summer, the delicacy of the Spa towns . Drawing, particularly drawing the human figure & face, has given me more enjoyment than any other form of art, although now the distinguishing lines between drawing and everything else have become more blurred. My love of literature, drama and performance – especially dance - have inspired me to explore in my art what the body is capable of in movement and at rest, how it expresses emotions and character, what kinds of conflicts are playing out through its lines and form. Telling a story is usually what we do in words, but through my art I strive to convey something of those narratives, whether immediately human or in the environment that we create and involve ourselves in.
