Colour and light, and the landscape – that’s what inspires much of my painting. My work has evolved over many years, and is influenced by all kinds of things; not least artists such as Cezanne, Matisse and Kandinsky, the Scottish colourists, and my experiences as a designer. Lighting is a vital ingredient too... it could be the drama of a Scottish storm, or the vibrancy of siesta time on a Greek island, or the deep shadows cast as evening falls over the Lancashire fells. And, of course, there’s colour. I learned the value of colour theory at school, and now every picture is a chance to experiment and evolve ideas. I mainly use oils and oil pastels, adopting a bold, figurative style and revelling in the opportunities to use strong, effective colours. CURRICULUM VITAE I grew up in Edinburgh and trained at Cheltenham College of Art and Bristol Polytechnic, finishing in 1985 with a BA (Hons) in Graphic Design. Ten years in that profession took me all over the country before I re-trained as a Secondary Art Teacher in 1996. Having thoroughly enjoyed 18 years teaching in local Clitheroe schools, I became a full-time painter in 2014. Life doesn't get better than when you get to do something you really love as a job! EXHIBITIONS My work has been on show frequently since 1991, in various British galleries, in group and solo settings. Locations have included Cheltenham, Edinburgh, Poole, Lancashire, North Yorkshire and Ulster. Last year, 2016, saw me show work solo at Art in the Pen in Skipton, and the Chester Arts Fair...both were extremely successful. COLLECTIONS Work is held in private collections, mainly in Britain and Ireland, but also in Austria, Denmark and Australia.
