I've long been fascinated by the ability of certain artists to create a convincing representation of some aspect of the real world in a painterly manner without resorting to photorealism. This is not painting impressionistically - because drawing and tonal composition seem to be critical to the success of such work - but painting which achieves authenticity through precision and selection. Early influences included Sir William Russell Flint, Edward Seago and John Singer Sargent. Currently, I'm studying and enjoying the figurative and still life paintings of Richard Schmid and Quang Ho as well as the beautifully controlled watercolours of Liu Yi. I work in traditional media - watercolour, oil, pastel and acrylic - and often use software (Photoshop, Painter) to develop pencil drawings into colour studies to use as references during the painting process.
