Hello and welcome to my Art Gallery page. My name is Paul Allen and I am a Sculptor, working from my home studio in the medieval town of Shrewsbury, Shropshire. I have recently completed a BA in Fine Art at the University of Wales, Wrexham, where I spent the final year specialising in figurative sculpture.
My work is mainly figurative and expressionist in content. I find that the figure is an ideal medium for expression, and just the slightest adjustment in the fingers or tweak of the pose can make all the difference in the expression of the final piece. I use anatomy books to inform my work and attend regular life drawing classes to give me a better understanding of the shapes and form of the body. My chosen medium is wire and wire mesh as I enjoy the amazing versatility and strength that they both offer. I really enjoy creating a piece of art out of such mundane materials; there is something very satisfying about transforming a common roll of wire into an attractive figure and giving it a new life and purpose.
All of my figures have been created using my own unique technique. I build the figures from small sections of 1/2 inch wire mesh that is moulded and twisted into shape using a pair of pliers. I usually start building the sculpture from the feet upwards by gradually adding more and more sections of mesh and twisting the ends into each other. I use two to three layers of mesh on each sculpture which gives the figure excellent overall strength. When I am happy with the finished pose I wrap the figure from head to toe in 1.6mm single core wire to give it uniformity. All figures are zinc coated and given a final coat of protective lacquer.
I have previously exhibited and sold my work in various galleries around the Shropshire and Welsh Border areas and I am always happy to receive people’s comments and suggestions.
I find a lot of inspiration in looking at the work of the many great figurative sculptors of the past i.e. Gianlorenzo Bernini, Auguste Rodin, Demetre Chiparus and I am continually inspired by contemporary artists that are moving figurative work forward, such as Antony Gormley and Ron Mueck.
I hope that you enjoy looking at my work.
Paul Allen.
