I am currently studying for a degree in Fine Art + Philosophy.
Studying Philosophy alongside Fine Art has had a profound effect on my practice. Reading essays on current ideas within the philosophy of aesthetics make me question what is and what is not a shared experience, the nature of the observer, and the (im)possibility of expressing an idea at all.
Having no preconceived idea or intention of portraying any particular subject, the theme that seems to be emerging from my art is that of identity. Not just of human identity, but also the identity (and history) of objects and the identity of space. What makes an object or a person recognisable as such? What, if a canvas or photo shows an object or person in an unrecognisable form, does this say about both the object itself and the ability to represent it.
My pieces also have a narrative very much connected with the passage of time. Identity changes as we age and conveying or including an element of time either in the presentation of the work or in the execution of it helps me explore my own concerns about aging and also allows me to play with conceptual ideas regarding time itself.
