A relative new comer to painting, Laurel’s artistic background began in London in the 1970’s where he worked as a photographers assistant. Later his photographic training enabled him to set up a black and white photographic business in London in association with a picture framing workshop.
Early 80’s saw him move out of London, first to Somerset then Cornwall and it was then that he began to paint. What began as a relaxing hobby to begin with was rapidly followed by commercial success as people bought pieces of his work.
Often it is the simplistic aspect of his paintings that appeals, making them suitable for a wide range of tastes.
He specialises in still life, many of the paintings depicting food, combining the traditional genre with a contemporary feel making them attractive to today’s collector.
Using his knowledge of light enables Laurel to explore the organic form incorporated in much of his work.
Laurel is currently living in a converted mill in St Erth, just outside St Ives.
